Now that polls are unanimously showing that the majority of Americans do not approve of the way that the administration is handling Iraq, John McCain has finally decided to criticize the President with more than just a silly smile:
"Stuff happens, mission accomplished, last throes, a few dead-enders. I'm just more familiar with those statements than anyone else because it grieves me so much that we had not told the American people how tough and difficult this task would be."Those phrases are closely associated with top members of the Bush administration, including the president.
Bush stood below a banner proclaiming "Mission Accomplished" on May 1, 2003 after the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime. The war has continued since then, with the death of more than 2,600 members of the U.S. military.
Dick Cheney said last year that the Iraqi insurgency was "in its final throes.
I can't help but ask. Where was Mr. McCain in 2004 when this country needed a Republican leader to speak out to show that our failures in Iraq were not part of a partisan game? Where was he when it beame patently clear that we were not told the truth as to why we were fighting this war? Where was he when the administration used fear so as to scare people into believing that Iraq and Al Qaeda were in some way related?
Where was he?
He was raising money for the president. He was standing right next to him and cheering him on the whole way. Well Mr. McCain, the lives of our soldiers aren't worth your dirty political agreement to rub the President's back so that you could get his support in '08. This move comes far too late.
