The threat of Democratic fillibuster against the appointed head of the FDA worked to ensure the approval of the Plan-B pill (a.k.a. the morning after pill), which had been approved by medical experts, but withheld from the market for "moral reasons" --i.e. withheld because of Republican pandering to religious fundamentalists. The pill prevents pregnancies if taken up to three days after sex, and it is suggested that it could prevent up to 3 million unwanted pregnancies per year.
