It's not just the polls that say so, his large margin over Hillary with independents is actual proof. Even before getting elected to the Senate he called for bipartisan unity. He won 70% of the vote in the Illinois Senatorial elections by asking Americans to get beyond the arbitrary divisions that red and blue states have created. Republicans are beginning to see the artificiality of the conservative coalition with the falling apart of the three pillars of the Republican party: neo-conservatives, religious-conservatives, and fiscal conservatives. These groups have less in common than they've been fooled into believing. Military aggression is not a Christian value. Being against environmental protections is not a neocon value. And having the government spy on us is not a fiscally conservative value. We could evaluate a number of other issues that have been bundled together in the disparate groups that make up the Republican party as well. These have been the result of an arbitrary party loyalty that has demanded toeing to the line, not because of some mystical coherence between these varying groups. That's why Obama's post-partisan approach is so encouraging, because it is a vital step in building a movement for change. Winning the White House with a 50+1 strategy will only take you so far. Being able to touch voters on the other side of the arbitrary isle is what is actually needed to get things done.
