Israeli Elections

Since Olmert had to resign because of corruption issues, the Kadima Party (the "centrist" party) held elections today to elect a new leader. The good news is that uber-hawk Shaul Mofaz did not win. The bad news is that other than some pretty belligerent statements recently made by Livni, we don't know much about her. Gush Shalom has an article summing up this sentiment. Read it here.

Oh, and there's still the risk that if Livni can't form a ruling coalition with the parliament that general elections will be held in 2009. That could very well mean another uber-hawk taking control in the form of Netanyahu. Unfortunately with the current state of Israeli politics, even a hawkish left (in the form of Ehud Barak's Labor) doesn't have any chance of winning.
