Kucinich Bill: Update

WASHINGTON - July 25 - Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), Ranking Democratic on the House Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats, and International Relations, gave the following floor speech today on the continuing violence in the Middle East:

"At this historic moment the United States is failing in its moral obligation to bring a cessation of the violence in the Middle East. This policy of inaction will have great consequences for the region, the world and safety of our nation and our allies.

"The United States stands alone in our ability to bring an end to the violence in the Middle East, relieve the humanitarian catastrophe that has enveloped the people of Lebanon, Palestine and Israel.

"In the short term, we must call for an end to the violence. Then, without preconditions, we must bring all parties in the region to negotiate a long-term settlement that will be enforced by peacekeepers. This is the purpose of House Concurrent Resolution 450.

"As we demonstrate concern about the plight of the Israelis, so we must not be indifferent to the plight of the Arabs, Muslims and Christians, and all others who are suffering the destruction of their homes, their families, their hopes, their dreams.

"As the violence continues, with no end in sight, and with civilian casualties on the rise, this is the moment to call for the end of fear and the beginning of hope. House Concurrent Resolution 450 does just that."

A Bill We Can Support!

Jewish Voice For Peace has also come out showing their support for Kucinich's bill. Read below and take action:

Finally, we have a bill in the House of Representatives that we need to support. Brought by Dennis Kucinich and with 23 co-sponsors, H. Con. Res. 450 calls for an immediate cease-fire, multi-party negotiations and an international peacekeeping force. Click here to read the text of the bill.

The bill we told you about earlier, H. Res. 921 passed very quickly through the House. 410 representatives voted for the bill, only 8 against, with 10 not voting and 4 voting "present", which is essentially an abstention. You can see who voted how by clicking here.

If your representative did not vote for the bill, call her or him to thank them. AIPAC will surely be contacting them to criticize their position. They'll need our support.

Now we have a bill that we can support. It is crucial that we send a clear message to our representatives supporting this bill. Use the form below to let your representative know that you support H. Con. Res. 450.

The US Campaign to End the Occupation has designated Tuesday, July 25 a national call-in day. Please take a moment to locate your representative's phone number by going to our home page at www.jewishvoiceforpeace.org. Scroll down near the bottom of the page and enter your zip code under "Who's Your Rep?" Call your representative on July 25 and urge them to vote Yes on H. Con. Res. 450.

Kucinich - a Voice of Reason

Yesterday the House passed a resolution 410 - 8 that "supports Israel's right to defend itself, including to conduct operations both in Israel and in the territory of threatening nations in accordance with international law, including Article 51 of the United Nations Charter." The resolution also "commends the President of the United States for fully supporting Israel as it responds to attacks by terrorist organizations and their state sponsors. "

In contrast, Dennis Kucinich, who abstained, proposed an alternate bill today calling upon the President "to appeal to all sides in the current crisis in the Middle East for an immediate cessation of violence and to commit United States diplomats to multi-party negotiations with no preconditions."

I wrote Kucinich yesterday with the following words, and figured the least I could do would be to post his response.
