My Honest Assessment: Democrats will Lose the Election if Hillary is the Nominee

I honestly believe that Hillary would almost guarantee that another Republican would be elected to the White House. Putting aside all the reasons I support Obama over Clinton, perhaps equally important as all of those is that I am truly convinced that Hillary just cannot win the general election. This is because in a year marked by Republican apathy, the Clintons and the Lewinsky escapades simply energize the social conservatives far too much. Remember, 50% of Americans have said that they would NEVER vote for her. Furthermore, she polls behind 3 out 5 Republican candidates (and behind John McCain by 7%) while Obama polls ahead of them all:

Hillary Clinton:

  • Defeats Romney 46% to 44%
  • Is defeated by Huckabee 48% to 43%
  • Is defeated by Giuliani 46% to 42%
  • Is defeated by McCain 49% to 42%
  • Defeats Thompson 48% to 42%
Barack Obama:
  • Defeats Romney 53% to 35%
  • Defeats Huckabee 47% to 42%
  • Defeats Giuliani 48% to 39%
  • Defeats McCain 47% to 43%
  • Defeats Thompson 52% to 36%

This is a genuine concern and should not be taken lightly. As I've said before, even with all the gripes I have with the dirty politics her campaign has engaged in and the triangulation that has marked her stances, I would vote for her in a heartbeat if she were the Democratic nominee, as I believe getting a Democrat to the White House is objective number one. But all things aside, I really think it would mean definite defeat for Democrats if she were to represent the party.
